Brief Historical Development of GAMBY Medical & Business College
Higher education is an instrumental for the national development. Higher education institutions give every student the scientific, philosophical, historical, psychological and anthropological foundations of knowledge with regard to humankind, its environment and its different societies. This leads to the acquisition, understanding, appreciation, internalization and dissemination of professional knowledge and skill, human and societal values, with special attention to the goals of peace and democracy and protection of the environment.
One of the most conspicuous manifestations of the commitment of the Federal democratic Republic of Ethiopia to develop the nation is its favorable policies that allow participation of private sectors in the education of health professionals.
In response to this national effort to improve the health status of Ethiopian populations, GAMBY Medical &Business College has been playing its own role by producing health professionals, and would like to expand its programs to post graduate programs in public health.
Julius Neyerere-the former president of Tanzania, stated “The University in a developing society must put emphasis of its work on subjects of immediate moment to the nation and their humanist goal”. As a response to the immediate felt need of the nation, GAMBY Medical &Business College has come into existence as a pioneer of training health professionals as a private institution in order to support the government effort for the achievement of Millennium development goals and health service development plan as well as to bring rapid improvement in the prevailing health situation of the country.
GAMBY Medical &Business College was officially launched in 1998 EC (2005). It started with three diploma programs. Now it possesses eight undergraduate programs, and three post graduate programs.
The College is one of the four sister companies that are included in GAMBY Plc. namely GAMBY General Teaching Hospital, GAMBY Medical & Business College, GAMBY Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Wholesale, GAMBY Pharmacy, and GAMBY Consultancy Services. Administratively these sister companies are pooled and managed by single administrative and finance manager.
In its inception, the college aimed to discharge its national duty in the health sector development program through education and training of skilled health professionals at mid – level that render health services to the Ethiopian population at large.
At that time, private colleges in nursing were evolving for the first time in the history of Ethiopia and the need for training of clinical nurses was acute. Therefore, a diploma course in clinical nursing, pharmacy, and medical laboratory trainings were started.
At, present the college gives the training of undergraduate programs in Medicine, Public Health, Clinical Pharmacy, Midwifery, Clinical Nursing, Medical laboratory, Financial Accounting, and Management.
